****WARNING – Due to the graphic nature of some scenes, this book is not recommended for those who are particularly sensitive to the death of a child and/or suicide.****
For some, it’s simply one of life’s certainties, nothing more. For others, it’s merely a fleeting thought, one often overshadowed by the reckless delusion that they have been blessed with the gift of immortality.
For Aubrey Miller, death is the definition of her very existence. Overcome with the guilt resulting from the loss of her beloved family, she alters her appearance from the once beautiful, blonde-haired, blue-eyed little girl to that of one shrouded in complete darkness, enveloping herself in her own unbreakable fortress of solitude as a form of protection for others.
As she enters her first year of college, her goal is simple: Earn a degree with the least amount of social interaction as possible. What she never anticipates is the formation of very unlikely relationships with two people who will change her life in ways she never believed possible: Quinn Matthews, the boisterous former pageant queen, and Kaeleb McMadden, a childhood friend from her past who never really let her go.
Over the years, as their connections intertwine and grow, a seemingly indestructible bond is formed between the three…
But when death painfully reemerges, Aubrey is lost once again, burying herself deeper than ever before inside the familiar fortification of her fears.
Will the refuge of friendship, the solidarity of life-long bonds, and the power of unconditional love be enough to do the impossible?
Will they be enough to finally bring about…
The Resurrection of Aubrey Miller?
Those are the things that have followed Aubrey since she was a little girl and with everything she has experienced she decided at a very young age to bury once and for all Aubrey Miller and become a person most would call a freak just to protect them from her destruction.
Believing you are the cause of so much anguish will kill a person’s spirit and will to live life, not actually to breathe and exist but to actually live life and find happiness. Aubrey Miller died a long time ago and it will take revisiting her past and the acceptance and help of new and old friends to truly resurrect Aubrey Miller from the dead so she can start living life for the first time in many years.
L.B. Simmons brings us a novel so different and gripping it will make you wake up and feel the story. My heart broke for Aubrey (Raven). She was a lost soul that needed help finding herself. Dead to the world and living in darkness she truly blames herself for events from her past that were out of her control. Blaming herself for so long and never seeking help for the trauma experienced at such a young age she has never truly lived life, just existed and that broke my heart.
The Resurrection of Aubrey Miller is not your typical dark sexy read because the main focus in just a young and lost girl, a girl so broken she truly feels she isn’t worthy of friendship and love. It’s not sexy or steamy – yes L.B. throws a few steamy moments in this book but it’s so much more than your new contemporary romance – it should really be in a class all its own because it’s real and raw. It’s an emotional heartfelt story that focuses on the ups and downs a person can go through when faced with so much trauma in their life.
When Aubrey heads off to college she heads off as Raven – but what she doesn’t know is that sometimes you meet people who the more you push the more they will pull and she is about to face 2 people who stop at nothing to bring Raven out of her darkness and although they don’t know it (YET), they may just end up resurrecting Aubrey Miller.
Not only will you fall in love with Aubrey you will fall head over heels in love with Kaeleb and Quinn. Kaeleb what I can I say about him? He is determined and witty. He doesn’t take Aubrey’s bullshit and makes her own her shit and I love that about him. He doesn’t give up and continues to push and push, which I something I felt like Aubrey/Raven needed more than anything.
“As long as you continue to travel through life in this darkness, you will never know how beautiful your light truly shines when you let yourself love and be loved. Trust me when I say, it’s a breathtaking sight to see. You burn as bright as the sun.” He dips his head and peers at me from under his lashes. “You see, I found the strength and courage to fight my demons because of how brightly you shined. I hope that one day you’ll find that source of light and let it heal you, too. Because if you do, it will illuminate your path and eventually lead you home……”
Holy swoontastic right?! Yep Kaeleb is a sweetheart and fights for Aubrey even if he is fighting an endless battle. He doesn’t give up easily. He has a way with words that stole my breath away.
“You know, if the sun and the moon were to actually collide, it would set off a cataclysmic reaction of epic proportions. Are you ready to have your world completely obliterated?”
He has his own past and demons that haunt him too. He pushes Aubrey to come to terms with her past and face it and learn to live life again. But he has his own secret he has been keeping from her from the first moment he saw her.
“I know your secret, which in turn has been my secret…Bree.”
I was so excited when things started falling into place for Aubrey, she finally started to resurrect herself and bury Raven. Without the help from Kaeleb and Quinn I don’t think Aubrey would have come as far as she did in this story. With the help of her professor she starts to unlock all the memories she has buried from so long ago and starts to come to terms with her past. You will watch her struggle and grow as a person and it put a smile on my face to finally meet the real Aubrey.
Things don’t last forever when another traumatic event happens and causes Aubrey to regress back into her black hole and revive Raven again my heart broke. She had come such a long way with her healing and moving forward to watch the light from her eyes fall away and retreat back into her darkness my heart was broken. A depression so deep – not even Kaeleb could help her come out of it. At this point I wanted to shake the doubt and guilt out of her and snap her out of it because she had come so far to just turn around and slump back into her death.
Will the darkness consume Raven for good keeping Aubrey dead and buried or will that glimmer of light that Kaeleb see’s in her eyes resurrect Aubrey Miller and keep her in the light?
L.B. touched on so many different things with this story. Not only did she give us a real and emotion draining read she showed us depression and mental health issues. Thousands of people suffer from these diseases every day and there is help out there all you have to do is seek it. You are worth it; everyone deserves to actually live life to the fullest, not just exist, but to be happy. You deserve to laugh, love, and be loved.
Every being in this world makes an impact on at least one person they encounter during their lifetime. You can change the course of someone’s life by just a kind word, a hateful one, or even by simply choosing not to say anything at all. Every choice you make has the potential to create a ripple effect, trickling into and affecting the lives of others.
Life, your existence in this world, is indeed a very powerful thing. Truly a gift that you can give to others.
