Book Review – Undone by R.E. Hunter

Undone by Rose Hunter ebooklg

Five years ago, Embry Jacobs ran…

She ran from a past that still hasn’t let her go, but her dream of becoming a lawyer is stronger than her fear of confronting that past. Embry’s sole focus is to get through law school—with the help of her best friend, Morgan—and make something of the broken girl she became. Not thinking about falling in love, being in a relationship or even entertaining the idea of romance, Embry is moving forward one day at a time.

Luke Brody is charming and sexy, and has a past of his own. He wants nothing more than to put his demons to rest and move on with his life. But, when Embry enters the picture, is he destined to repeat those same mistakes?

Blindsided by their instant attraction, neither Luke nor Embry are prepared for the feelings they’re developing. But will it all be for nothing?

Will they let their pasts destroy them, or will they risk everything to fight for their relationship when it all comes undone?

4.5 Angsty Stars!

Undone is R.E. Hunter’s debut novel and she did an awesome job with it.  I found it to be well written.  The characters were well developed and the story seemed to flow well.  She does a great job of telling about the off limits relationship of Embry and Luke.

Embry Jacobs is a first year law student.  She seems to have it all together.  A great apartment and her best friend Morgan, who is attending law school with her.  After high school graduation, she packed her bags and moved to Florida without a word to anyone.  She wanted to leave her troubled past behind and start fresh.  She managed to do just that.  Never telling anyone her real reason for “running away.”   One the first day of classes she runs into Luke.  Just one look form him sets her heart a flutter.  She doesn’t want to tie herself down this year. The first year of law school is the worst and she does not need the distractions that any guy can bring.  Especially the one standing in front of her.  Not expecting to see him again, she walks away.  After a few more chance meetings with the mystery man, they exchange phone numbers.  Embry can’t seem to stay away from him.

“Do you need me to explain to you how hard it is for me to be around you? How I can’t think straight when you’re near me? How I can’t breathe when you get too  close? That despite how hard it is, I find myself rationalizing all of this just to find another excuse to be near you?” ~ Embry

Luke Brody is a Lawyer.  He practices general law and has his own practice.  He also does research work with one of the professors on the campus that Embry attends.  When he finally gets the chance to sit down with Embry and learn more about her, he doesn’t want to let her go.  The pull he feels towards her is stronger than anything else he has experienced. But with a past that he has buried, will he be able to let Embry in?  Can he let his walls down? I loved Luke.  Tall, dark, bright, bright blue eyes and a muscular body built for sin.  His character is extremely protective, but loving, supportive and nurturing all at the same time.

“I came here to get away from you. I had no idea you’d be here. I just wanted one night without having to think about you… about us. But then you walked in, and I couldn’t stay away. I can never stay away.”

What starts off as a few simple dates, quickly develops into so much more.  With both of their crazy hectic schedules, they find whatever time they can to be together. Learning more about each other and what they want out of their lives.  When suddenly everything changes.  Embry walks into class one day and finds that Luke is now her professor.  What was once an easy relationship has been thrown a huge complication and the ramifications can be life changing for both of them.  Struggling to find a way to be together, without anyone finding out, proves to be to hard for Embry to handle.  Especially when they believe that someone has found out and notified the ethics committee.  Luke is ready to walk away from everything that he has worked so hard to achieve, all for Embry, and her education.

Embry’s character is in no way perfect. But she has worked hard to over come her past and create a bright productive future.  She has big dreams and will not stop for anything to achieve them. I loved how strong her character was,but there were times when she just could not decide what it was that she wanted.  And that frustrated me.  She would do what she thought was best, but in the end she created more hurt and frustration for herself and Luke.  Only to change her mind again.

With an awesome cast of secondary characters, Jeremy, who is Embry’s study partner and who secretly lusts after her.  Morgan, her crazy, loving and all supporting best friend.  And Brett, her friend from high school, who is more like an older brother.  Who happens to be dating Morgan.

Will their pasts bring their relationship to a crashing halt?  Can they help each other overcome all the hurt and anguish in their lives?  Will they be able to forgive each other for the lies, deceit and betrayal?

Overall, a really good book and a great job on her debut novel.  I want more of Luke and Embry!  Well done R. E. Hunter.  I look forward to reading more of your work. I was very impressed with her knowledge of the legal system. Come to find out, she is a lawyer.  No wonder the story flows well and is not filled with holes.  She tells about the legal system and how it works,  from a point of view that is easy for the reader to understand.  Touching on a   sensitive subject of verbal and some physical abuse.  4.5 Stars
