Book Review – Hard As It Gets by Laura Kaye

HardAsItGets Final with quote

Tall, dark, and lethal…

Trouble just walked into Nicholas Rixey’s tattoo parlor. Becca Merritt is warm, sexy, wholesome–pure temptation to a very jaded Nick. He’s left his military life behind to become co-owner of Hard Ink Tattoo, but Becca is his ex-commander’s daughter. Loyalty won’t let him turn her away. Lust has plenty to do with it too.

With her brother presumed kidnapped, Becca needs Nick. She just wasn’t expecting to want him so much. As their investigation turns into all-out war with an organized crime ring, only Nick can protect her. And only Becca can heal the scars no one else sees.

Desire is the easy part. Love is as hard as it gets. Good thing Nick is always up for a challenge…

Nick Rixey is ex-military, Army Special Forces.  He has returned home to help his younger brother run Hard Ink Tattoo.  He is apprenticing under his brother and is damn good at it.  When he is not perfecting the art of tattooing, he is a process server.  When Becca Merritt walks into the tattoo shop one day, old wounds are opened.  She is the daughter of his ex-commander.  And she has come to ask for his help.  Her brother is missing and the last bit of information that he left, has lead her to Nick.  He wants nothing to do with Becca and her brother.  Her father created enough grief for him to last a lifetime and he harbors a lot of anger towards the man, even though he is no longer alive.  But he cannot ignore Becca.  He decides to keep an eye on her and see if she truly is in danger.  What he never expects is to fall for her, while trying to protect her and save her brothers life.

Nick is a sexy as hell, tattooed, military man!  Once he sets his mind to something he has to follow through with it.  He is extremely protective and Becca brings this quality out in him even more.  He is tough as nails and has  to confront his past, no matter the consequences.  When he left the military, he walked away from four of his best friends.  They were all injured in a different way, while six other men in their unit were killed.  He doesn’t know how to stay close to them.  He didn’t realize that they would all need one another to lean on.  So when, he needs more help in finding Becca’s brother and protecting her, he calls in a favor to his military brothers.

Becca Merritt is an ER Nurse.  She loves her job, even with the crazy hours and cases that come through the emergency room.  She is extremely dedicated and committed to her work and to helping others.  She has already lost both her parents and another brother and she will stop at nothing to find her brother Charlie, even if that means putting herself in danger.  When she meets Nick, her world is turned upside down.  When he comes to her rescue one night, when an intruder is in her house, their fate is sealed.  And when he finds that there may be a connection between Charlies disappearance and the discharge of his buddies and himself from the Army, he is more determined than ever to help her out.

I am normally not one to read mystery/suspense/romance books.  But I loved Hard As it Gets.  Laura Kaye’s writing style is awesome.  I was hooked from page one and only put it down when I absolutely had too. The depth of her characters is awesome and the story line is believable.  The chemistry between Nick and Becca is HOT HOT HOT!!!!

“Are you wet for me?”
“Oh, f**k, sunshine, you are so wet.”
“I am wound too tight Becca. Do you understand? in about ten seconds, I’m going to be all over you. And I’m not going to be able to go slow. It’s gonna be hard and fast and rough.”

I am talking have your BOB handy hot!!! LOL.  I have read so many books, that you become desensitized to some of the content, well in this book, that was not the case.  The sex scenes are off the charts hot and written really well.  I wanted more of Becca and Nick!

5 Stars

I was asked to read and review Hard As It Gets by Laura Kaye for Swoon Worthy Books. I know this is going to be bad to say, but this is my first time reading a book by Laura Kaye, but I can say she now has a new book fan. I absolutely fell in love with Hard As It Gets. I didn’t really know what to expect from the title of the book. When I got the book and looked at the cover, I can honestly say that there were so many things that ran through my mind on what this book was going to be about (which I don’t think I will tell you what all went through my mind). I just knew that I wanted to read it.

Becca Merrit is no stranger to loss, as a ER nurse she sees it every day but on a personal level she has lost not only her mother and oldest brother, but also her father. Now when she least expects it she is now missing her youngest brother Charlie.  After having a disagreement with her brother Charlie, Becca discovers that he is now missing or has possibly been kidnapped. Becca turns to the police, which is no help to her and with only one clue left by her brother to find possibly the one person that can help her locate him she is sent to Hard Ink Tattoo shop to locate Nick Rixey, who just so happens to be part of her father’s special forces military team.

“It’s hardly taking advantage if I want it.” – Becca

Nick Rixey never thought he would have to deal with another Merrit in his life. After being let go from the military with a not so honorable discharge thanks to his former CO no longer being the man that he looked up to. He has alienated his self from the remaining men of his team, and just tries every day to deal with the pain (physical and emotional) of the days when he lost everything. He has to deal with the fact that the man he looked up to and was his mentor turned out to be the one person who betrayed him the most. But the icing on Nick’s cake comes in the form of a beautiful woman, who comes in his brother’s tattoo shop asking for his help. The last person he expected to see was Becca Merrit, the daughter of the man who betrayed him and took his life from him. Nick must face reconnecting with the men that he pushed away to help him solve this mystery of Becca’s missing brother, but in the process maybe they can solve the conspiracy that ruined their careers.

“I’m trying to do the right thing here.” -Nick

This is where I have to stop because I really don’t want to tell you the whole book and that is so hard not to do with this book. It is such a great read and when you start talking about it, you want to tell everything that happened in the book, but I guess you will just have to read that for yourselves. To say that this book is only a romance book is an understatement, because it has mystery, suspense and action all rolled into one, but ultimately yes it is romance.  With the twist and turns that Kaye puts into this book you will not want to put it down. And if this is the first book that you have read from her you will be an instant fan and if it is not with this book she will continue to have you fall in love with her work.
