4 Star Review
I fell in love with Kelly when reading Wanted! Her characters and writing style was easy to get lost in and with Broken she did it again. From the very first word I was pulled in and held captive until the very end. Kelly pulled strong emotions from within me in the very beginning and kept me entranced until the very last word. She did a beautiful job telling Whitley and Layton’s story. Their individual stories and their story as one. With her supporting characters Courtney ad Reed she left me wanting more and I can’t wait to get more.
In the beginning getting to know Whitley and her story left me feeling emotional pain for him and I knew it was going to be a very emotional read. Like so many women she loves easily and wants nothing more than to be happy and in love. Life isn’t easy, it’s not fair and Whitley quickly learns that leaving her a broken shell of a person that she once was. The fire in her eyes is gone, her bubbly personality is lost and the love she gives so easily is under lock and key and she vows to never give her heart away again because she knows that getting hurt again would destroy what little is left of herself. After tragedy strikes Whitley again she finds herself with her best friend packing up their lives in New York City and found themselves starting over in Llano Texas. This is her new beginning, her chance at a life that will make her smile.
Layton Morris didn’t have an easy childhood. Losing his mother at a young age and having his dad run out on him and his brother, Michael, left the boys fending for themselves as best as young boys can do. The only family he has left is Michael and the love of his life Olivia. When tragedy strikes that causes him to lose the two people he loves the most he finds himself broken and empty. Wanting to make his brother proud he continues to build their dream in Llano Texas raising cattle and having the best race horses in the business. Being hurt the way Layton was hurt he doesn’t do love anymore he can’t afford to because he knows that anyone he loves will eventually leave him and he can’t afford that.
I could tell the moment that Whitley and Layton ran into each other they were going to make a very steamy couple that I wouldn’t get enough oh. Whitley’s defenses were up because of her past and all she saw when looking at Layton was a sexy cowboy with a handsome southern drawl but a man nonetheless and all men were the same right? When Layton met Whitley for the first time he saw a sexy, snarky, up tight city girl that annoyed him. So why couldn’t they get their minds off each other. It was great reading the attraction between the two and watches them fight it. I was screaming at my kindle for them to finally give up and give in to their desires but had the same time understood why they couldn’t.
Oh but Kelly doesn’t disappoint because when enough is enough and they give in they are electric. Sexy and steamy don’t even describe what Kelly gave me when those two got naked together in a room. I found myself fanning myself trying to calm down because I wanted to be her. I wanted to be her in the car, in the bedroom, up against the shower stall; I just wanted Layton! (There I said it – Kelly made me want Layton in all his naked country cowboy glory).
I loved Courtney, Whitley’s best friend. She is spunky and snarky and very loyal to her friends. She cracked me up so much during this book that I felt like I was laying all the time. She has a tough exterior but on the inside and loving and gentle. She is very protective over Whitley because of her past and is defiantly someone I would want in my corner.
Old demons never die though, never. Whitley will have to come face to face with the monster that has not only haunted her in her dreams but haunted her every day for years. Her relationship with Layton is growing strong and just when Whitley and Layton are both healing from their pasts Kelly throws in a curveball having Whitley face to face with her demons and Layton risking it all to save her. He promised to always protect her no matter and that is exactly what he is going to do. Sometimes those demons are strong enough and powerful enough that they will stop at nothing until they totally consume their prey. Is it too late for Layton to save Whitley from her past? Will he get there in time? The clock is ticking! Will Layton fulfill his promise to always protect Whitley and lay down his life in order to do it?
Beautiful story Kelly Elliott. At the very beginning I was in deep and knew it would be emotional. Yes it was emotional on certain spots but it was also fun and loving. Kelly had me entranced from the very beginning and never let go.
